I'm pretty sure that he's a part of the cult. The details check out:
- The girl's mother was researching something similar to what the girl currently researches
- The mother died, probably killed by the old man. Then, the old man adapts the clueless genius child
- He probably wants to use the daughter's intellect to decipher/unlock something. It's suspicious that he's so willing to let analyze and study an object clearly wanted by the cult. Does he have no safety concerns? Anyone with more than 10 IQ will know that the crazy cult is likely to send all the best assassins to get the item back.

The foreshadowing is already there, from the first moment the old man is introduced. The light reflecting on one side of his glasses always implies that something is being hidden.
Most importantly, the cult knows exactly where the object is, so someone close to the girl is obviously a traitor. And since the old man can't get the item by himself without arousing suspicion, he's involving the entire cult to get the help he needs.
